Optometric abbreviations - Link now set up in Resources

Post by Izopter »

Would a list of optometric abbreviations - often used here, and not always obviously explained, plus new ones, be of interest for the Resources?

I have in mind a wikipedia type thing that can be updated added to, amended, challenged even, by members.

I bet it is not only the students who have to guess at times

PS It will NOT be a place for SMS txt abrvns. :!:

Great idea.

We could start a thread with the first draft, then people could add additional suggestions.

Dr Day is the King of optom abbreviations. Often he uses so many in one sentence that I don't know what he's on about.

OK OK draft One coming up.. er.. down:
Abbreviations used in optometry. NO sms txture please.
(Unfortunately this list will not tabulate here but should be OK when posted to Resources from a wp prog.)

the idea is an opti-wikipedia:
Opti-breviations
These can be altered / amended, challenged, new / invented and requests posted (eg con and sine).
It can be updated from time to time by re-posting and asking for changes and then updating the Resource.
I have started with the series ?x but there will be many others no doubt (eg vd included).

ax axis
bx
c/o complaining of
cx contact lens(es)
ddx differentiation (d/dx)
dx diagnosis
ex from / out of
fx family history
gx
Hx - Hospital
IDDM insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NonIDDMN)
ix
jx
kx
lx
mx medication
NAD No abnormality detected
nx no history
ox ocular history
prx prescriber / practitioner
px patient
qx
rx prescription
sx symptoms
Tx - Treatment
ux
vd vertex distance
vx vertex Vx - Vomiting
wx
yx
xx
--------------------------------
^ prism = shift 6
??????????????????????????
Wanted:
c bar = con = with
s bar = sine=without

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
19Jun proposed changes: (amber/yellow)
Hx - Hospital Tx - Treatment Vx - Vomiting

I have always been told the following extra/different ones.

Hx - Hospital
Tx - Treatment
Vx - Vomiting

Must be something to do with the SO working in a hospital.

So we have proposed changes: (amber/yellow)

Hx - Hospital
Tx - Treatment
Vx - Vomiting

I'll post those into the list.

If you agree with one copy it in green into your post
If you disagree, copy it but mark your replacement in red, into your post.

Now above there is an eg:
which?
Vx for vertex - likely in optometry
Vx for vomiting - unlikely to be useful in our context
So I go with

Vx - vertex
Hx - hospital
Tx - treatment

If we cannot quickly get a consensus we can poll it - I hope rarely.
But please give positive feedback otherwise entries may default to my suggestions: flattering but not democractic.

I thought it might qualify as Senior (House) Officer in a hospital situation.
