How I Found This Site !!
I found this site via Optiboard in the US. I am a UK based D.O with my own practice. Sort the Banner out so that is grabs attention, get the site with a "dot. co. uk" address so that we know its based in the UK, and it'll be a winner. Needs an Ad in OPTICIAN though. I'll contibute to costs if others will join in, and we can all fight the corner for professional eyecare together. PS, I found posts by a Mr. Murray-Wells on the US sites going back 4 years or so. Seemingly harmless questions being asked....
Now please wash your hands.
Interestingly - I was reading the Optical Express Wikipedia page and one the external links is theoptom.com.

About the banner, I think once you're on the site the actual look of the banner becomes less important.
I agree though that it could be more obvious visually that this is primarily a UK based site, but that is stated in the title of the homepage (see top of browser window). I mainly opted for a .com because it rhymed with "theoptom".
The site has been mentioned in the optician and OT in the past, but not via an ad. The site has mainly been spread by word of mouth and some minor guerilla marketing.
